Today, India’s digital payments ecosystem continues to upgrade to the next level with each passing day. From everyday transactions to large purchases, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has become the preferred mode of payment for millions. Yet, despite this digital shift, cash still plays a crucial role in daily life - whether for small vendors, emergencies, or personal preferences.
Traditionally, withdrawing cash meant relying on a debit card at an ATM. But forgetting or misplacing the card is a natural human behaviour. To bridge this gap, UPI-enabled ATMs have been introduced for seamless cash withdrawal without a card. In this blog, we will explore everything every Indian needs to know about the UPI ATM cash withdrawal process.
UPI-ATM is an Interoperable Cardless Cash Withdrawal (ICCW) facility that allows customers of UPI-enabled banks to withdraw money from any ATM that supports UPI-ATM, without the need for a physical debit card.
At the ATM, the customer simply chooses the 'UPI Cash Withdrawal’ option and enters the desired amount. A unique, one-time dynamic QR code will then appear on the ATM screen. The customer needs to scan this QR code using any UPI application and authorise the transaction by entering their UPI PIN on the mobile app. Once verified, the ATM dispenses the requested cash.

The transaction limit is up to ₹10,000 per withdrawal. This limit is inclusive of the existing UPI daily limit and in compliance with the limit set by the Issuer Bank for UPI-ATM transactions.
Security: Transactions are highly secure as they use a single-use, dynamic QR code and require UPI PIN authorisation. ICCW also reduces the risk of card-related fraud, such as cloning and skimming, conducted through ATM machines.
Convenience: No need to carry a physical debit card. With just your smartphone and a UPI app, you can withdraw cash anytime.
Interoperability: The service works seamlessly across participating banks and ATMs. You can withdraw money from any UPI-enabled ATM, even if it belongs to a different bank than yours.
Flexibility: Unlike withdrawal using a debit card, you can choose from multiple bank accounts connected to your UPI app to withdraw money.
UPI ATM cash withdrawal marks a significant step forward in banking convenience, offering customers a secure and cardless way to access cash at any time. Instead of relying on a physical debit card, users can simply scan a dynamic QR code displayed on the ATM screen using their preferred UPI app and authenticate the transaction with their UPI PIN. This process ensures enhanced security, seamless interoperability across participating banks, and a smooth user experience, making cash withdrawals faster, safer, and more reliable for everyday needs.
