Planning your retirement is not just about setting aside money; it is about ensuring long-term stability and peace of mind. In India, the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) plays a crucial role in this process by safeguarding employees’ savings and providing financial security in retirement. Since the scheme involves monthly contributions and accrued interest, members require clear and transparent details of the funds.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) makes this easier by providing members with a digital EPF passbook, which allows them to track deposits, withdrawals, and interest earned over time. In this blog, we will guide you through how to download EPF passbook online quickly and conveniently.
An EPF passbook is a digital document provided by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) that records all transactions in your EPF account. It includes monthly contributions made by both the employer and employee, the interest earned, and any withdrawals or transfers. Essentially, it works like a statement, offering transparency and a clear snapshot of your retirement savings.
To access the passbook, employees need their Universal Account Number (UAN), allotted by EPFO. If you've worked with multiple employers, you will have separate passbooks for each account, linked through your UAN. The passbook helps verify timely employer contributions and acts as a helpful tool for long-term financial planning.
| Eligible Members | Non-Eligible Members |
|---|---|
| Must be an active member of the EPF scheme. | Inoperative members: Those whose EPF accounts have become inactive due to an extended period of non-contribution. |
| The Universal Account Number (UAN) must be activated and registered on the EPFO portal. | Settled members: Individuals who have fully withdrawn their EPF balance after retirement or when leaving their job. |
| Exempted establishment members: Employees working for organisations that maintain their own EPF trusts. |

The EPF passbook serves as a reliable source of information for employees to monitor their contributions, interest accruals, and withdrawals. It ensures complete transparency in tracking retirement savings and helps members detect discrepancies at the right time. With the simple options available for EPF passbook download through the EPFO portal and the UMANG app, employees can conveniently access their records at any time. This makes it easier to plan finances, confirm employer compliance, and maintain control over long-term savings.
The EPFO passbook is not available as a physical document. You can download the passbook after completing your EPF passbook login on the EPFO portal or UMANG app.
Any changes or updated details made on the EPFO portal will be visible in the EPF employee passbook after around 6 hours.
Go to the EPFO/UAN Member e-Sewa portal → Click 'Forgot Password' → Enter Universal Account Number (UAN) → Enter your name, date of birth, and gender → Enter the captcha code and your Aadhaar number → Verify details with OTP sent on your registered mobile number → Create a new password to regain access.
You can check employment details across multiple establishments by visiting the EPFO website, selecting ‘e-Passbook’, and logging in with your UAN, password, and captcha. After logging in, click on ‘Service History’ to view all establishments linked to your UAN.
The EPF passbook facility is not accessible to exempted establishment members, settled members, and inoperative members.
